We had a successful event and all of the exhibitors worked hard at keeping their space stocked for the six week stint. I'm not sure what was my best seller as I sold a bit of everything this year. <br />
<br />
Felt hats are always a hit although I still have the one shown in the second picture.<br />

I had to stop knitting, hooking and weaving at one point because I ran out of wool. I spent a happy couple of days carding and spinning. I enjoy the process and am happy standing at the drum carder which sits on a windowsill in the sun lounge. We have lovely views taking in quite a few of the northern isles. The sunsets are stunning <br />

<br />
The following sequence of photographs give an overview of the process of blending and spinning a two ply hank of wool from coloured fleece. <br />
<br />
Step 1 - I pick the colours to be blended. Sometimes this is planned and at other times it's a bit random - sorry experimental.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikx5PSDiilKKmhy5Ud9MM3x6E1joH5d9mO_ZyJYecaeMGkNjjgdap-xoCDOv_DeiTrE1XjTLQnjj3RW9r1iLWvB5CCi9sK4hkayfcI2tNMpVYTq1OIcNCwuoSoHpyw47Llq51uBjPOwPKK/s1600/spinning+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikx5PSDiilKKmhy5Ud9MM3x6E1joH5d9mO_ZyJYecaeMGkNjjgdap-xoCDOv_DeiTrE1XjTLQnjj3RW9r1iLWvB5CCi9sK4hkayfcI2tNMpVYTq1OIcNCwuoSoHpyw47Llq51uBjPOwPKK/s320/spinning+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Step 2 - The colours are blended by running the fleece through the carder . This process produces a rolag. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 3 - The individual colours become less distinct the more often the rolag is split and through the carder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 4 - A rare opportunity to spin outside. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXuAqf1YixHlzokbm-5yO4PHX29JTWtaYRhj-MUB_mmYzxgsq34gWGhdFMFg0CWOQMRqi6wEDrc8p25qI1P9Aia1kOq9GqUGZyl9CU21He2A4k9f5wGZt8_OSJksF3JDJClgzdH-WHqCzt/s1600/P1070031.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXuAqf1YixHlzokbm-5yO4PHX29JTWtaYRhj-MUB_mmYzxgsq34gWGhdFMFg0CWOQMRqi6wEDrc8p25qI1P9Aia1kOq9GqUGZyl9CU21He2A4k9f5wGZt8_OSJksF3JDJClgzdH-WHqCzt/s320/P1070031.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Having blended, spun and plied the colours in the hank were more subtle than the original individual strands shown above.<br />

April has passed me by as far as blogging goes and May would have been the same had I not purposefully set aside some time for this 'just-in-time' effort. I need to mark a day each month in my diary - now that would be organised, but would it work? I don't think I will ever be as proficient as my friend Sian Thomas of' 'Life on a small island' fame. An interesting blog worth a visit. Go to sianthom.blogspot.com Sian lives on Graemsay - the land of my forefathers - well some off them at least.<br />
<br />
Both April and May have been busy with trips off island and visitors - just grand. <br />
<br />
So what I have been up to craft wise?<br />
<br />
<strong>April</strong><br />
A trip south to visit small grandchildren and their parents necessitated making two non-sew material baskets to hold a selection of chocolate eggs. These were fun to make and quick. All that was needed was some rope, strips of material and a needle. I got the idea from Pinterest <a href="https://uk.pinterest.com/storm0522/fabric-bowls/"><em>https://uk.pinterest.com/storm0522/<b>fabric</b>-<b>bowls</b>/</em></a><em> </em><br />

<br />
I could become hooked and I plan to explore basket making further at some point. I have made baskets in a past life. <br />
<br />
I have also been making a few Christmas decorations for Peedie Hansel in Kirkwall. Yes Christmas decorations in April. Here are some examples of my makes. Using 4 inch embroidery hoops, felted jumpers and some fleece I needle felted a few pictures. <br />

I have woven some scarves but hooking pictures seems to be taking over. It's all enjoyable.<br />
<br />
And finally...<br />
<br />
While south in April we took our eldest grandchild for a sleepover in our camper van. Kermit ( a well loved toy from her mothers childhood) came too. <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the end of the trip Sheep was tucked under the bed in the camper van ready for it's trip north. See the blog from February 1st for the history. Sheep now sits close to our front door next to a concrete cat. </div>

<br />
Today it has rained and rained and rained. Still a trip to Haughland Tea Room and a visit to the Heritage Centre and craft shop fair cheered up the day.<br />
<br />
See you in June. Hopefully it will be warm and dry<br />

I think patchwork pictures are my personal favourite. I really enjoy this activity. Images of hearts, hens and sheep are also fun to play with. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
You may have noticed that I have modified the way I mount the pictures on to the canvas. I have decided to cut the hessian large enough that it can be wrapped round the board. This means that there is more picture and I no longer need the calico. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have also added a new style to my hand knitted with hand spun wool hat collection. This is the point where I find out slouch hats are a bit yesterday. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This style is great to knit. As well as incorporating some sari silk I have also decided to introduce the odd bit of extra texture by randomly varying the stitch. I aim to do a bit more of this in the next hat. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif6qVdqFr1Sk_JEqZGXTEAQu705c7qt29VbOqUbxTfIBqkS_0uNr-sEsdDCYvu9SdeuIIVI7Zy4WuoJbomJkhV5_MGEYA_a5xQOY4rQo4hH3V-f88H5aNPNkz5Jsks7TTf_SoqFPayH4Fo/s1600/close+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif6qVdqFr1Sk_JEqZGXTEAQu705c7qt29VbOqUbxTfIBqkS_0uNr-sEsdDCYvu9SdeuIIVI7Zy4WuoJbomJkhV5_MGEYA_a5xQOY4rQo4hH3V-f88H5aNPNkz5Jsks7TTf_SoqFPayH4Fo/s1600/close+up.jpg" height="191" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Talking about hats - I have modified the props I use to display my hats. I was very pleased with the idea of placing polystyrene balls on candle sticks. This approach works well, however, when you sell a hat you are left with a rather unsightly ball. I decided to cover the balls in paper mache. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBbCSKL1taIXhT4A6635fQpYeyCGiZDX8Yw4QzFsvBm_h9isuUf7452Dk3y7QAHM1pZs_VvKz3HN6BV8gXJWJP7k8mofoRRNBFgoMU3dltVUIqoz9sxs1OGuz7vUpA4edzBBcVjOqeaToQ/s1600/P1060781.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBbCSKL1taIXhT4A6635fQpYeyCGiZDX8Yw4QzFsvBm_h9isuUf7452Dk3y7QAHM1pZs_VvKz3HN6BV8gXJWJP7k8mofoRRNBFgoMU3dltVUIqoz9sxs1OGuz7vUpA4edzBBcVjOqeaToQ/s1600/P1060781.JPG" height="320" width="273" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once dried I gave the balls two coats of watered down PVA which has given a smoother, harder surface. They should survive being transported to and from various events and occasionally rolling around on the floor. </div>

All in all it has been a successful month. April is going to be no less busy. The pictures are destined for Casteaway Crafts, Dounby so I will need to make some more. I put two woven scarves into Peedie Hansel, Kirkwall and spent some time weaving a scarf as a donation to the silent auction for Orkney Creative Hub <a href="http://www.orkneycreativehub.co.uk/">www.orkneycreativehub.co.uk</a> The auction runs till Monday April 6th. Instructions for bidding are on the website so please go and have a look and bid if you see something you fancy. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that jazz. </div>

<br />
<em>'Wow! I love the new scarf and hat, you have my complete trust and respect. Your work is original and amazing, you make ordinary daily items special. I have had many compliments on my blue beanie hat, from LA to Tokyo, but the compliments are for you. People respond to the weaving and colors, me too'</em> <br />
<br />
Pleased and relieved that the scarf and hat went down well. You sort of know when someone buys something from your stall that they are happy with their purchase.<br />
<br />
I have made some brooches, hanging felt hearts and small key rings for a new shop opening in Kirkwall. The shop is called Peedie Hansel, which translates into Small Gift, and can be found at 45 Albert Street. This adventure is being undertaken by Jean Ross - so good luck Jean. <br />

Talking about needle felting, I made this wall hanging while spending an enjoyable crafting afternoon in a local artist bothy. My efforts now hang on the kitchen wall.<br />

<br />
And finally, a new main for an old(ish) horse. I spent a fun afternoon with my eldest granddaughter renewing the mane of the rocking horse her Mum and Uncle used to play on. We used ribbons of sari silk and pieces of woollen jumpers. The mane may be developed on their next visit. I was thinking about some button along the edge of the mane on the 1st image below. Any comments welcome.<br />

Two postings in one month!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well how excited was I when I received a request through Orkney Arts and Crafts from a man living in Seattle. He had been on holiday in Orkney during the summer and bought one of my hats that were hand knitted with my hand spun wool. He was now making a request for another knitted hat (slightly smaller than the one he had) and a knitted scarf in earthy tones. In the end it was agreed that a woven scarf would be better. It was also agreed that it could be narrower than the original request. It's quite tricky negotiating via email but we got there - I think . There is no quick way of checking things out or showing a variety of yarns and saying 'which would you prefer?' The colours here don't truly reflect the actual colours. I was pleased with the end product though. The scarf is 7" wide which is wider than my usual but wide enough without being too bulky. </span> </div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Operating as a registered Community Interest Company (CIC) The Orkney Creative Hub will provide a central location for education, development and innovative enterprise opportunities for Artists, Designers and Crafters of all ages and abilities across many disciplines, from within and outwith the Orkney community. By incorporating an active outreach programme The Hub will support artists and makers across the Orkney Isles </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This will be the first time there is a central focus for established artists and makers to promote their work and for the community to have access to resources to explore and develop their individual creativity. The proposed facility will facilitate access for a far wider audience that is presently possible to a range of education, facilities and equipment. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We need all the support we can get both in terms of funds but also support in relation to the numbers who are taking an interest in what we are doing. </span><br />
<br />
We can be found at <a href="http://www.orkneycreativehub.co.uk/">www.orkneycreativehub.co.uk</a> The website is still under construction. Please note the Donate Button. Every little helps. In the unlikely circumstance that the project does not succeed, the money raised will be returned or donated to a charitable organisation depending on the preferences of individuals who have supported us in this way. <br />
<br />
I'll keep you posted. <br />

<br />
I have little stock and having made a list of 'must makes' I now need to prioritise my crafting endeavours. Fun activities such as spinning, sewing, hooking, weaving and knitting are competing for my time. That said I need to spin in order to get started. So much for being ahead of the game.<br />
<br />
I have a very good reason for taking time off during January. A new granddaughter arrived in the wee small hours of Christmas Eve morning. Please note the jumper, my hands haven't been totally idle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheytC1ApQhbkBA2NIobZ8qsvHx0Abt0L0eHJIzfrkuhb6uv28ZcjNvdxlHDLT9dpK1r5YtyjPukraISkjfnxkDIxNAmwICpkaYeg3DCl49JLnn3o1e3Be4Fqgxj_d4Rw-MRbTmi-K6Zp0b/s1600/Lucy's%2Bjumper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheytC1ApQhbkBA2NIobZ8qsvHx0Abt0L0eHJIzfrkuhb6uv28ZcjNvdxlHDLT9dpK1r5YtyjPukraISkjfnxkDIxNAmwICpkaYeg3DCl49JLnn3o1e3Be4Fqgxj_d4Rw-MRbTmi-K6Zp0b/s1600/Lucy's%2Bjumper.jpg" height="214" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also completed a '<span style="color: black;">Welcome to our home' wall</span> hanging. The picture is hooked in hand spun wool and some sari silk. I hand stitched the names onto small pieces of calico which were then sewn on to the canvas along with ceramic heart shaped buttons. I think I will do a few more of these hangings but back them with calico rather than use artists canvas. I will either sew a sleeve at the back or make tags so it can be hung up. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioFDDyEoyP_wVv4KSOOyAKHAEQq85h2X76IAS-FJlo3-nq_JK52ot9RdpLh-xDrBH_2Opw6Q1zgmfKLMU0lIul-DEN7hUJm1zULcHFtwTgBIraoYquCYAtXnoBs9eYpNArWBvqkafUuTCz/s1600/P1060529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioFDDyEoyP_wVv4KSOOyAKHAEQq85h2X76IAS-FJlo3-nq_JK52ot9RdpLh-xDrBH_2Opw6Q1zgmfKLMU0lIul-DEN7hUJm1zULcHFtwTgBIraoYquCYAtXnoBs9eYpNArWBvqkafUuTCz/s1600/P1060529.JPG" height="135" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I have also fulfilled an order for two felted hanging hearts similar to this one. <br />
<br />

<br />
So that's enough for now. Before I go let me introduce you to Sheep - a birthday gift. Many thanks I love it and am looking forward to bringing it home. This sheep is 24" high, 31" long and 14" wide. <br />

The Christmas Craft Fair season is in full swing. I attended one craft fair near the end of October (Shapinsay Parents Association comes to town). This was followed by a fair in November and two in December (Orkney Arts and Crafts). I didn't make the last one in December but I think it went well despite the wet and windy weather.<br />
<br />
Here are some of my Christmas craft offerings<br />
<br />
A day in the Town Hall Kirkwall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS_PqsqfQ8Pm9kP3HGXyKIapfTpLTfO8qOInTsVRq03a_xvSD13eEiahownGqBAwi-uOwMjEMCvpYbhIpw3imkfIAN2ybYM5_486kegwdvYGIeC5Hz6vAEh8mrytf2MyiTIFH-c_5cnCrv/s1600/Christmas+Craft+Fairs+2014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS_PqsqfQ8Pm9kP3HGXyKIapfTpLTfO8qOInTsVRq03a_xvSD13eEiahownGqBAwi-uOwMjEMCvpYbhIpw3imkfIAN2ybYM5_486kegwdvYGIeC5Hz6vAEh8mrytf2MyiTIFH-c_5cnCrv/s1600/Christmas+Craft+Fairs+2014.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
A different day in the Town Hall - having sold a hooked picture and in response to the lovely comments made by various people I pressed on and made a few more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHRUdvsHAONCPNz0Mx8zMjYhw0C8pL8QJZIzzJ8Qw03Me6G_YKMlikakz9Pd7CvOfTW5VdpW_HH9KnRm4YVtroKXYV-S-_0xf99SFn4TIJUPIjpfBZdwa6f4crSIvYbNsA6f-piGU6kXPS/s1600/photo+1+edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHRUdvsHAONCPNz0Mx8zMjYhw0C8pL8QJZIzzJ8Qw03Me6G_YKMlikakz9Pd7CvOfTW5VdpW_HH9KnRm4YVtroKXYV-S-_0xf99SFn4TIJUPIjpfBZdwa6f4crSIvYbNsA6f-piGU6kXPS/s1600/photo+1+edit.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Note the finished hen picture - very pleased with it. Also keen on the sheep. My friend Sian bought one similar to the small one here. Sian also bought a small chicken and they are now adorning a recently refurbished room. I put a larger version of the sheep into Castaway Crafts, Dounby which is owned by Fiona Mitchell. And here are some random photographs.<br />
<br />
This posy is one of two which were handmade and carried by my granddaughters at their Uncles wedding in August. I knitted some flowers, others were made from felted jumpers and some from buttons and beads. <br />

Well it's time to get on with the festive preparations. I will be back in the New Year although I think I will refrain from making any rash promises to myself or anyone else that I will post on my blog more frequently ... then again.</div>

Summer posts haven't been a feature of this blog despite my best intentions, nonetheless, I have had an action packed crafty time.<br />
<br />
The summer craft fair at the Town Hall during June and July went well and kept me busy right up until the last day. Hats seemed to be the most popular item. As I sort through my stash for the next event in October I realise that my knitted and woven scarves also went well. I need to build up my stock for the various fairs to come - the local schools parent council event in October and two Orkney Arts and Crafts Fairs in November.<br />
<br />
August saw a flurry of activity centred around Show time. I joined in a modified version of the Back to Back Wool Challenge at the East Mainland Show. The idea is to have a fleece clipped (not shorn) from the back of a sheep, spun, knitted and on the back of a person as quickly as possible. There are exacting rules around this activity which have to be followed. Google Back to Back Wool Challenge to read more about this. Other search engines are available.<br />
<br />
We didn't follow the rules to the letter as we weren't mounting a serious/official challenge. That said we weren't that far off either. It was with mixed feelings that a group of three spinners and four knitters sat in a tent in the middle of a field and set to work. Five and a half hours later, or there about, one of the happy spinners holds up the completed garment. We did well and it could be looked on as a practice run?<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
All in all it was a good day. I didn't see any of the animals but spoke to lots of interesting and interested people. We took £170.97 in donations which went to a local charity.<br />
<br />
A few days later at the Shapinsay Show I was again sitting in the middle of a field spinning. This time I was on my own and the only challenge was sorting out a firm base for the chair and wheel. Heath Robinson eat your heart out. I managed to raise roughly £27 for the RNLI.<br />

<br />
Since then I have been hooking pictures with my hand spun wool. There will be two hens in this picture and some sort of border I think. I drew the image from a photograph I took of my friend Gill's hens.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have also done three smaller ones which are roughly three and half inches by four inches. Yes I can count, the missing picture is a hen.</div>

<br />
I will sew the hooked pieces onto calico and then stretch them over a canvas board. <br />
<br />
I have also been experimenting with heart shaped wreaths made from wire and small pieces of felted jumper. More about these efforts the next time. <br />

Until then Keep Calm and Keep Crafting.<br />

Orkney Arts and Crafts holds a summer exhibition in the Town Hall, Kirkwall for 5/6 weeks during June and July. The run up to this event sees me indulging in bursts of intense crafting sessions fitted between holidays and social happenings. The trouble is you never know how much you are going to sell and what is going to be popular. I try not to get bogged down (or perhaps that should be wound up) as I find the making aspect enjoyable and want to maintain that feeling. <br />
<br />
This season my hats made from woolly jumpers seem to be popular. My hand woven scarves and hand knitted hats using yarn that I spin are also selling. I have to make it clear at this point that I'm not talking big numbers but that doesn't detract from the sense of amazement I experience when I find another hat/scarf or brooch has been sold. That said the brooches, hair slides and key rings are moving more slowly - if at all. I must say I am surprised that I haven't sold more key rings but there you go. Perhaps they will be next years 'thing'.<br />
<br />
As part of the group I do my fair share of being a sales assistant. It is a very interesting and enjoyable experience. Lots of visitors to the islands come into the exhibition with many spending quite some time having a good rummage. There are roughly 60 exhibitors and some lovely crafts. There has been a lot of positive feedback. I will post some photographs but you should visit the website to see more or if you are in Orkney take yourself along there. Possibly the face book page is best just now as there seems to be a few gremlins in the web site. <br />
<br />
The Smithy on Shapinsay is also open with many local crafters contributing to the a lovely and varied display. <br />
<br />
For your interest the following hats are my most recent creations. The first two are sold. The others are hot of the sewing machine and heading for the exhibition later on today along with two scarves.<br />

They are all my favourites <br />
<br />
I went to a talk on intellectual property and copyright for crafters the other night. More about that in the next post along with a more scarf theme. <br />
<br />
Bye for now folks.Sandrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05098749089415825044noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1026182875293116945.post-6093126724197945382014-05-14T05:55:00.000-07:002014-05-14T05:55:13.175-07:00April already - surely notNo it's no longer April it is May! How did that happen?<br />
<br />
Trips away, happy visitors and the general ebb and flow of life mean I haven't been quite as productive as I would have liked. The usual story of good intentions and any excuse to do something else. That said I am happy with what I have achieved and although this post consists mainly of hats I have been busy making other 'stuff'.<br />
<br />
I have knitted a few more hats with my hand spun wool. I enjoy this activity and it is transportable. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBB3nAOF0eExhuRnTJWD7cSxz2ata2gea-8R5laioCVxYnEwkGHz8mZrv3vwusZzs-D7KvhRLlJfq3ulHQad2tWdPaZa1BWJ_A5liHv5hwzEIqu0fQO89ZTj-buPF9DJ8CBak41FO7_pYn/s1600/Hat+for+April+blog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBB3nAOF0eExhuRnTJWD7cSxz2ata2gea-8R5laioCVxYnEwkGHz8mZrv3vwusZzs-D7KvhRLlJfq3ulHQad2tWdPaZa1BWJ_A5liHv5hwzEIqu0fQO89ZTj-buPF9DJ8CBak41FO7_pYn/s1600/Hat+for+April+blog.jpg" height="276" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This hat is quite thick but fun with a mixture of sari silk, thick and thin hand spun wool, hand spun with glitzy bits and some with slubs. I hadn't predicted that it would end up this shape so it was a pleasant surprise.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSorjboLBo94-jmZQAQJiHmZtIanzjLKT4R03ir_ISWXZu28I0jYD729KxeJV-L4Lflbcx3oLVxZdUOlZUHYbpBRgyxSSP_Cu_tw9uPvIlb1Srb2jgc6enJ3LZ3ctwvHSym8N_ISOpjQ6-/s1600/Hat+for+April+blog+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSorjboLBo94-jmZQAQJiHmZtIanzjLKT4R03ir_ISWXZu28I0jYD729KxeJV-L4Lflbcx3oLVxZdUOlZUHYbpBRgyxSSP_Cu_tw9uPvIlb1Srb2jgc6enJ3LZ3ctwvHSym8N_ISOpjQ6-/s1600/Hat+for+April+blog+2.jpg" height="272" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The thickness of the wool makes a difference to the shape as the next photo demonstrates. Hand spun wool again and the same pattern and size of circular needle but more of an aran weight than chunky.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have also been playing with felted woolly jumpers. A bit like the knitted hats I am not always sure how they will turn out. I need to learn to plan as at the moment they evolve as I go along. This approach can involve unpicking stitches from time to time. This hat had two different bands before I settled on a thick rib taken from the front of a large jumper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It sits like a beret on an actual head but you get the picture. I am still thinking about putting a button on the centre at the top. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next hat wasn't quite finished when I took the pictures. I was unsure whether to put a band on it. In the end I finished it off by edging it with buttonhole stitch and some pale grey hand spun wool. I am tempted to keep it.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are a few more but that's enough of hats.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And now for something completely different - spinning wheels. I love my spinning wheel. I have had my Ashford Traveller for 25 years or there about. Still my thoughts wander from time to time to something different. eBay made the purchase of spinning wheel number three (I'll describe number two in my next post) relatively easy.</div>

What I need to source are some bobbins. The regular Ashford bobbins I have aren't the right size. I am hoping that my other half can adapt one or two, if not I will need to have them made. Another more novel approach might be to buy another spinning wheel of a similar style and vintage with bobbins, or at least one bobbin. I have noticed that there are a couple on eBay with a different seller. I have a few days to think about it. Guess I better run the idea past the other half? Who knows it could work out cheaper than having them made and then we would have spares. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The spinning wheel I have purchased has a not so well done mend on the wheel itself which may be sortable (is that a word?) but I am happy with it as it is. The timing was perfect as it all fitted in with a pre-planned trip south. A family member happened to be visiting friends near Dunblane just days after the purchase was finalised so they collected the wheel and we then picked it up from them. It was meant to be and I am sure bobbins will be found (one way or the other). It lends itself to spinning finer wool whereas wheel number two is good for chunky art yarn. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well key rings, hair clasps, brooches, hats and scarves won't make themselves and I have a line in fridge magnets to explore. Anyone for a felted fridge magnet? I also need to tackle the mound of washing we produced during our last trip away in the camper van. </div>

How time flies right enough. Thanks to Blackbird for the timely reminder that March is almost at an end. I have been busy but that's no excuse for not keeping up with my blog. So where to begin...?<br />
<br />
In response to a request for a slim, hand knitted scarf that could be worn all day in the same way as a cotton or silk scarf, I headed off to my stash of odd balls of commercially produced yarn that lives in my craft store room. I enjoyed a good old rummage and got quite excited by the different colours and textures. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of my first effort but it was well received. An order for a second one, with hat to match, has been placed. <br />
<br />
I booked a space at the table top sale held on the island in early March. This event provided the gentle nudge I needed to try out some of the ideas I had been toying with since the beginning of the year such as key rings and hair slides. I also decided to knit a few of the narrow scarves to add to my woven selection. <br />
<br />
The scarves are knitted using 4mm or size 8 knitting needles, 15 stitches and stocking stitch. They are roughly 77 inches in length and have the obligatory buttons at each end. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWcInCNxwYKpjq-IWbWM0rkDtyiXzan6TfYCky9m2zW1ka0Agrm0zF6nA7nUwOo3JWjILetbNoWnA8KF_GrzJG5P8T0ld8zLBw3fciBiQ9eOft4gHDxXE6BgUPgqZAkWBsvUCrFgPFTI4r/s1600/Three+knitted+scarves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWcInCNxwYKpjq-IWbWM0rkDtyiXzan6TfYCky9m2zW1ka0Agrm0zF6nA7nUwOo3JWjILetbNoWnA8KF_GrzJG5P8T0ld8zLBw3fciBiQ9eOft4gHDxXE6BgUPgqZAkWBsvUCrFgPFTI4r/s1600/Three+knitted+scarves.jpg" height="132" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I use various postcards as inspiration in relation to the proportions of different colours and textures/mood, for example this fun lively scarf was influenced by a card I have with hens on it. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The scarves fit quite well with my hand knitted hats. I have sold the hat on the right. These hats are knitted with my hand spun wool. I aim to knit some in the same commercially produced yarn as the knitted scarves.</div>

So ... have I meet the challenge I set myself at the beginning of January and finished my collection of unfinished projects by the end of the month? The short answer is no.<br />
<br />
Once I had finished the rag rug and safely delivered it to its intended owner my thoughts turned to the other unfinished projects stashed away in boxes and bags. A hooked rag rug and a wall hanging to name two. However, I got a bit distracted by competing thoughts of making bags and a new selection of hats from felted jumpers. The hats and bags won out with the following results.<br />
<br />
I made this bag from a felted v neck, 100% lambs wool, cardigan with pockets. The cardigan was in a sorry state when it came to me. It's previous owner had been a bit careless when washing it (lucky me).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiIGX0ex6ICh58DBOg6Bajihht2iKCJ0Y_l7gSemTOC6cNr2JsTfzKbbhf5snhVj0KXLtKno2D6OCfrQ6A05YY3kPvTQieYxIcenGFOUITZ0YBSzYvXxuRe814uR2scf5TQ9fkBknbklLv/s1600/GetAttachment.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUCH_uqN2R6PESsxeFpEMmWgREjPUqWr3Ypw1ekvMyuh5EE29lHHAUCEzJ8_CoC7gdiiqQ1tHWTtMNz9ZmUZl0uXzP9TKRNBXuCEKCzmv_kc51XK7DD2RpCW-KzrZyoXoo99APUvVl0SO8/s1600/AJR_20140130_3236.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUCH_uqN2R6PESsxeFpEMmWgREjPUqWr3Ypw1ekvMyuh5EE29lHHAUCEzJ8_CoC7gdiiqQ1tHWTtMNz9ZmUZl0uXzP9TKRNBXuCEKCzmv_kc51XK7DD2RpCW-KzrZyoXoo99APUvVl0SO8/s1600/AJR_20140130_3236.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I cut off <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">the</span> buttonhole and button band then sewed up the front of cardigan using my sewing machine. This seam became a side seem so that there was a patch pocket on the front and the back of the bag. I also sewed up the bottom edges incorporating the rib into the design. I cut out the sleeves and squared off the armhole and the neck edges. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I used the button whole band and a button to make a fastener for the pockets. These was hand sew in place.</span><br />

The handles for the bag are integral to the main structure and I applied three rows of straight stitch which was both decorative and strengthened the edges. <br />

I did consider using a bolder colour but on balance felt this subtle grey colour was better. The bag can be used as a shoulder bag.<br />

<br />
There are so many exciting knitting, weaving and felt projects to be getting on with I am going to have to write a list and carry out a prioritisation exercise. Having attending a spinning day on Saturday I now want to have a play plying <span style="background-color: white;">commercially </span>prepared wool with material like cotton, silk, threads and hand spun wool in order to produce an art yarn. The possibilities are endless. <br />
<br />
Oh for more hours in the day.<br />
<br />
Happy days and speak soon<br />

They are embellished on both sides and I attached them to various Christmas gifts. They also made a lovely gift on their own.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My aim for January is to finish the unfinished projects I have stored in various boxes and bags. There are a few aborted knitting projects and one or two wall hangings/rugs made from rags. It may be a case of taking a few things back and using the material for something else. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One such project is a rug that I started a year ago. The process isn't difficult or time consuming, I just get distracted sometimes. Rags and Remnants by Lizzie Reakes is a lovely book which sets out 25 step by step projects including crocheted, knitted and hooked rugs. I have a rug which I crocheted some time ago. Having used chain stitch as the foundation I then worked back and forwards in rows using a single crochet stitch and a 8.00mm crochet hook. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also have one constructed of knitted pieces sewn together to make squares. The squares were then given a crocheted border before being sewn together. The completed rug was then given a crocheted border. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These rugs have been down on various floors for the past five years or so and wash well in the washing machine. That said the crocheted one appears harder wearing and I prefer this style. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rug I am finishing off is made from old cotton curtains or cotton/polyester bedding - washed of course. The curtains below were donated to the cause by a friend. I lay the fabric out and cut a 1" wide (or there about) strip of material. I cut the material until I am roughly half an inch from the end and then turn and make another cut parallel to the first in order to make a continuous strip that is as long as possible. I clip the corners where I turn making them more rounded.</div>

Well I better get on - writing this blog won't put rugs on the floor and this one is heading sooth for a special little person's bedroom. </div>

<br />
I thought I would start the year by posting some pictures of the Christmas stocking I made at the end of last year for a special wee person I know. I felted/fuelled a woollen jumper and embellished it with pieces of felted jumpers, some coloured fleece, needle-felting, hand embroidery and some buttons. The holly was green but it appears blue in this picture. A white background and more light would have been better. I did take a few photographs with it hanging against a white door however, I took them with my phone and it died a few days ago taking my pictures with it (not an iPhone). A lesson learnt - send pictures to a different device/place, either that or get an iPhone. <br />
<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi4IPY-tf3uCjQkR56DIdxtFaNnDpeM0qpisfJcRJRHH4A3A4IyG5W6lQZNPBaeakgOqUq8UrExD7z0-XZlNOYWVBU11MXjPs9GubNGDOu43XJxNeAgw1kJnt5WQ_1uuDcj6ZyHin865Ug/s1600/stocking+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi4IPY-tf3uCjQkR56DIdxtFaNnDpeM0qpisfJcRJRHH4A3A4IyG5W6lQZNPBaeakgOqUq8UrExD7z0-XZlNOYWVBU11MXjPs9GubNGDOu43XJxNeAgw1kJnt5WQ_1uuDcj6ZyHin865Ug/s1600/stocking+2.JPG" height="254" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used a bit of hand spun wool to make a loop for hanging it from the mantelpiece. Yes it is quite large. When I said I was going to make a stocking for another special person a request was made that it wasn't too small. I took this request on board and probably made it on the larger side. The first stocking was made with hand spun wool knitted into a large oblong then felted and sewn into a stocking shape. I did have a couple of pictures on my phone but .... anyway they needed to be similar in size.</div>

Perfect weather for showing cattle, sheep, horses, ponies and poultry as well as family pets. The Horticultural Show took place at the same time and the school hall was filled with an assortment of crafts, jams, cakes, biscuits, fruit and vegetables. Sadly I forgot to take my camera. I'll ask someone if I can copy their photographs.<br />

I won four prizes for the following exhibits - three 1sts and a 2nd - fair chuffed.<br />

This bag is made out of some wool I had spun and knitted into a jumper. I wore it for a while but it was never quite right - the jumper that is not the bag. I have used the bag. I think the picture is a bit too bright. I really must get to grips with a good editing package.<br />

The hens featured in this batik belong to a my friend Sian from Graemsay. Obviously they are not this colour but I took a photo, enlarged it then traced the hens. Easy when you know how. I made the batik when I was doing the Applied Textile Design course at Orkney College. I embellished it with hand embroidery and beads more recently but wasn't sure what to do with it after that. I did look at various frames but nothing seemed to work. The Show spurred me on to do something and I ended up stretching it over an artists canvas. It has worked quite well although this picture doesn't show it fully. Sian has an interesting blog about life on Graemsay - I recommend you take a look. <a href="http://sianthom.blogspot.co.uk/">http://sianthom.blogspot.co.uk/</a> You'll find pictures of her hens, cake, sunsets, views towards Stromness, more cake and Buttons plus much more. Buttons has four legs. </div>

June saw 16 adventurous, arty, crafty souls take our wares to town where we had booked the Venue for a week in order to have a pop-up shop. Sorry about the reflections in the glass but these snaps from the street give you a taste of our exhibition. We took over two windows.<br />
<br />

A few of us spent some time in the larger window demonstrating our craft. Pat the artist painted, Louise did some needle felting and I did some spinning, others also contributed to the display. It could get a bit hot in the window and we weren't in there all the time. It was a fun experience though and we certainly got the attention of people walking past<br />
<br />
The second window was the window of the shop area.<br />

The majority of us were able to do a stint in the shop. The week was successful on a number of levels, not least the opportunity to promote Shapinsay as a place to visit. <br />
<br />
Some of our goods have been taken down to Tomb of the Eagles to be displayed on a 'Made in Shapinsay' shelf in their shop. Exciting times.<br />
<br />
At the suggestion of a friend I have been experimenting with the brooches I make from felted jumpers. Instead of sewing on a brooch clip I have threaded them through a coloured wire. I bought some different coloured wires from Bead Pop in Aberdeen. I am happy with the end result as they sit quite nicely. More fun to be had with this idea I think.<br />

I decided the fair isle pattern might appeal to visitors. I'm rather fond of the first one and the third one. So far I have sold a scarf, a brooch and a felted bracelet. I'm never going to make a fortune but it is fun and you do get quite a buzz when someone buys your wares.<br />

Not long until 'Made in Shapinsay' has a pop up shop in the Venue. We open for business on Monday 17 through to Sunday 23 June. If this venture is successful then we will confirm the provisional booking we made for December. It's exciting and a bit daunting at the same time. We overlap with the beginning of the St Magnus Festival so there will be plenty people wandering around in the<br />
<br />
evenings. Evening opening hours have been built into the rota. Thanks go to Claire Evans for introducing the idea and bringing people together. <br />
<br />
Orkney Arts and Crafts are due to set up their summer exhibition in the Town Hall at the end of the month. I am going to put in scarves, hats, brooches and felt bracelets. I also plan to do some necklaces. A picture of the prototype to follow. I have to thank Joan Greig for the idea. Joan hung a brooch that I had made her from a small silver chain. I had been thinking earrings - but then I'm always thinking about earrings. I may well put in some hanks of hand spun wool as well. I have asked for 25 swing tags - perhaps a bit ambitious. Just as well hubby has taken over in the kitchen.<br />
<br />
I'm looking forward to Woolfest, Cockermouth, Cumbria 28/29 June. I have planned to visit this event a few times but circumstances have changed at the last minute. I'm saying no more in fear of jinxing this trip. There is the added bonus of meeting up with friends we have known since we lived in Cumbria over 35 years ago. <br />
<br />
Well I better press on, the smell from the kitchen tells me tea will be ready soon. No - it's not a burning smell. Hubby has everything under control. Having browsed through The Ashford Book of Carding by Jo Reeve I decided to rummage through my stash of coloured fleece and play with my drum carder. I have had a drum carder for a year now but have only recently put down my hand carders.<br />
<br />
I decided to blend two different shades of green with red and a burgundy. I passed the layered slithers through the carder four times. Layering the colours one on top of the other gives a 'heathered' yarn as you can see below. Had I fed the slithers of different colour in side by side the end result would have been stripey.<br />

<br />All of these will be incorporated into scarves for sale in the Smithy on Shapinsay and the Made in Shapinsay event at the Venue in Kirkwall next month Monday 17 - Sunday 22. I have been thinking about selling hanks of hand spun wool. </div>

Well it's that time of year again when the Heritage Centre opens it's doors giving the good people of Shapinsay a chance to set out and hopefully sell their crafty endeavours. There is also a very good display of artifacts under the banner of 'Old Ways in Bygone Days'. The restaurant has also been refurbished and is looking very smart and inviting and offers a tasty selection of meals and home bakes. The shortbread is excellent. I think you must be due a visit.</div>

Another exciting development is the formation of the Made in Shapinsay group which will be in The Venue, Kirkwall for a week from June 17. More about that later.<br />
<br />
I am pleased to have been able to post some pictures although I seem to have been unable to access some that I had cropped. Better that you come along and have a look for yourself. Meanwhile I am going to get a grip on how I file my photographs. I am also off for a browse round the Quilting Museum in York. <br />
<br />
Back soon.<br />

I have been sitting here for quite a while now to no avail. You'll have to take my word for it that I have been busy making hats, felted brooches, felted bracelets and a few scarves. They are now for sale in the Shapinsay Heritage Centre. I have a photograph of the display at the Centre to share as I have not been alone in my crafty endeavours. It's all very frustrating and serves me right for not paying enough attention to this forum.<br />
<br />
I shall persever and hopefully got myself sorted out. Speak soon.<br />

There are two shapes I think I might focus on. One has five panels to it. The other one is the one in the following picture. Not sure what shape you would call it. Flower pot shaped doesn't sound very flattering.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I actually sold this hat at a craft event two weeks ago (roughly). Each time a liner comes in to Orkney The Pier Group, as they are known, pitch up at Hatston Pier. All good cold fun. We don't have a regular slot, however, if one of the regulars aren't going to be there then we may be offered the space. I didn't sell anything last Friday but had a lovely morning spinning which kept me and the tourists amused.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is almost the end of the season and time to reflect on a crafty summer. I am now going to devote some time to thinking about and experimenting with different ways of displaying my hats, scarves, brooches and pictures. I have started looking around the house for props. I also want to make some small mobiles from felted jumpers. Some of the old jumpers I have felted are too stiff for the sort of hats I would like to make. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

There just aren't enough hours in the day.</div>

I didn't get to the East Mainland Show as I was sooth. Mary went along though with my Simply Woven and More wares, Ali's Baskets and her own cushions, scarves and bunting plus a few other things. I did however, do my bit at the Shapinsay Show. It was a perfect day for showing the animals, not too hot or bright but warm enough and dry (most of the time). Our stall looked something like this.<br />

I took along my spinning wheel and spent a lovely day spinning and chatting to lots of folk. Quite a few people spoke about their Grannies spinning or in some cases their Mum. The different designs of spinning wheel that are available was a point for discussion. The Orkney spinning wheel has a double drive, I would love to find one for sale. My wheel is an Ashford traveller. My wheel and Ali's Baskets are in the next snap.</div>

I now have a few scarves, brooches and hooked pictures for sale in Odin Stone, Kirkwall. Odin Stone is a lovely shop which sells a mixture of local crafts and art work as well as crafty bits and bobs from other places. They also stock more 'mainstream' gifts. It's a lovely shop to browse in. Look it up and see on www.odinstone-orkney.co.uk
I'm taking my wares to the East Mainland Show and the Shapinsay Show next month. I'm also planning to take my spinning wheel and do a bit of spinning while I 'man' the stall. Fortunately it's not just me having to fill a table. Mary will have her lovely scarves, cushions etc for sale. They are all made from recycled material. Watch this space for photographs of our adventures. I wont leave it so long next time.Sandrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05098749089415825044noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1026182875293116945.post-13187229516911295842012-06-06T00:44:00.000-07:002012-06-06T00:44:44.052-07:00How time flies...<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">

...on hooking peedie (Orcadian word for small/little) simple pictures with my hand spun wool. <span lang="EN-GB">I have a small wooden frame that I stretch a piece of hessian over and fix with drawing pins.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I then draw the design (although that sounds like a rather grand term when applied to what I do) and fill it in using a crotchet hook and hand spun wool.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I tend to do around the edges first.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>

It took me some time to work out how to present the finished item. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> At first </span>I backed them with calico and put a small ring on so they could be hung up.
